A new kayak season begins and the conditions for kayaking are more than recommended! Everything went so fast… Only two months ago, still in the ski season, the outlook was still gloomy. It refused to snow or rain…
Snow for the ski tracks, water for the river!
It finally snowed a lot in March. It has revived skiing, while water reserves have increased. It has rained during many afternoons and now the weather is getting good: This makes you want to do water activities and also causes a strong melting that fills the reservoirs.
The reservoirs in the -so called- Internal Watersheds of Catalonia continue suffering, but here in the Oliana reservoir we are already at 90%! So, it is a very good idea to make an excursion by kayak with your partner, your family or group of friends and explore all the corners of the Pantà d’Oliana.
Plenty of water in the reservoir, all options viable
Now, with this mass of water, all excursions are viable. Go up in northern direction, for example, and meet the Mouth of the Segre, the main river. It is now very high upstream, at ‘Clops de Fígols’.
The Perles and the Sallent are tributaries of the Segre, which flow into the reservoir quite turbulent as well. It is very exciting to paddle into their estuaries, along the submerged trees, see the water changing and notice the current!
From the Mooring Place to the south, we find the Canyon ‘dels Esplovins’, with the serenity and the rocky and vertical walls. Until the dam we could arrive, but we’ll keep this option for later, at the end of summer, when the water level drops. Then we move to the Mooring Place in the southern part of the reservoir, where it’s deeper.

Remembering last winter
Finally, I want to put some images to remember what winter we come from. The most realistic images are the greener ones with a small circuit of artificial snow.
Thanks to this circuit and thanks to the extra effort of the cross-country ski resort staff and the instructors, we have saved all the school ski that had been scheduled in Tuixent – La Vansa and also the programs they couldn’t develop in other cross-country ski resorts!
That is why we are still quite satisfied, because we have shown that we can guarantee the minimum conditions needed. The most beautiful images, somewhat harder to find, are also from the past season.
In a few occasions it had snowed enough to enable the conditioning of the rest of the tracks. We have had about four weekends that have been splendid and busy and many private skiers have come. Because they are pending, and they know, when it is time to come to ski!
Now, something similar happens with the kayak: Consider the good water level and come to the Pantà d’Oliana soon!
